| | The week in ten seconds ▸ Pitt, the Penguins and the Steelers are all home this weekend. Pitt brings back the 1976 champs Saturday. ▸ Allegheny County has its first measles case. If you were at the McKnight Road Target last Thursday, read on. ▸ Driving in Oakland’s new bus lanes now costs $200. |
| Fifty years ago, a Pitt team won the national championship. Saturday those guys walk back onto the field, and the team hosting them hasn’t lost yet either. | What Pittsburgh’s Talking About | Everybody’s Home This Weekend. Start With Pitt. Saturday at noon, Pitt plays North Carolina at Acrisure Stadium, and the game is sold out. At halftime, the members of the 1976 national championship team get honored on the field. That was Tony Dorsett’s team, the year he won the Heisman. It’s been 50 years. Everybody gets a 1976 rally towel. Get there early and you get a Dorsett bobblehead. The part nobody planned: this year’s Pitt team is 5–0, ranked 25th, and it just lost its quarterback. Mason Heintschel had thrown for 1,304 yards and 14 touchdowns when he took a helmet to the knee Friday night at Virginia Tech. He’s out for the season. Holden Geriner, a fifth-year transfer, came in and finished a 35–33 win. Pat Narduzzi’s review: “He played well enough to win the football game.” The rest of the weekend: ▸ Friday: Dan + Shay at PPG Paints Arena, 7 p.m. Dan Smyers went to North Allegheny. ▸ Saturday: Pitt at noon, then Penguins vs. Dallas at 7. ▸ Sunday: Steelers vs. Colts at 1, then Chance the Rapper at the Wylie that night. ▸ All four days: Oktoberfest downtown, with a 60-foot Ferris wheel. The bottom line: the North Shore will be full Saturday and again Sunday. Saturday is 73 and dry. Sunday is the leftovers of Hurricane Isaias: steady rain from early morning on. If you only have one stadium trip in you, make it Pitt. | Measles Is in Allegheny County. Check This Time and Place. The county health department confirmed its first measles case in a county resident on Monday. The patient is a minor and wasn’t vaccinated. The exposure: the Target at 9805 McKnight Road, last Thursday, Oct. 1, between 3:45 and 5:45 p.m. The virus can hang in the air for up to two hours after a sick person leaves. No schools are involved. What to do: if you were there and you aren’t vaccinated, call your doctor before you walk into a waiting room. One dose of the MMR vaccine is 93% effective. Two get you to 97%. The statewide outbreak just passed 1,000 cases. | About 1,000 Duquesne Light Workers Are on Strike It started last Thursday and it’s now in its second week. The union, IBEW Local 29, says the two sides are still apart on safety and retirement. Duquesne Light says it has contingency plans to keep the power on. Worth knowing with a storm coming Sunday. | The Oakland Bus Lanes Now Cost $200 The warnings are over. As of Oct. 1, Pittsburgh Regional Transit police are writing tickets for driving in the new bus-only lanes on Fifth and Forbes, between Bellefield and Craft avenues. The cost: a $25 fine plus $175 in fees. That covers a quick pickup, a drop-off or a delivery. Bikes too. The one exception: where the line is dashed, you can merge in to turn right. | The Second Train to New York Starts Nov. 18 We wrote in August that a second daily train to New York was coming. The second Pennsylvanian starts running Nov. 18, and Amtrak says tickets go on sale this week. Today you get one shot, at 7:30 a.m. The second train doubles that, starting the week before Thanksgiving. | Empty for 30 Years, Open Again in Beechview | | Yinz Gotta See This | The $65,000 Stove at 350 Oliver Avenue“One of the most exclusive penthouses on the market in downtown Pittsburgh at this time. A $65,000 stove imported from Italy. Attention to detail in every corner and centrally located in one of the busiest districts in downtown Pittsburgh.” That’s the range on the right: Italian, eight burners, about $65,000 according to the listing. It sits across from a marble island three inches thick, next to two dishwashers, a six-foot sink and a tap that pours sparkling water. The rest of the place keeps up. While the Lumière tower was still being built, somebody took four condos and had them made into one. That’s Residence 1508. The great room has a glass wall that folds open like an accordion over the fountains in Mellon Square, and a projection screen drops out of the ceiling for the game. The owner’s wing takes up what would have been a whole condo by itself. Go look at the stove. | | See the Stove Listed by Austin Kyle Rusert, Coldwell Banker Realty. | | Sports | Colts on Sunday, in the Rain The Steelers (2–2) host Indianapolis Sunday at 1. After the 27–24 loss in Cleveland, the thing they keep landing on is third down: 4-of-13 against the Browns. Pitt: 5–0 and ranked 25th, home against North Carolina Saturday at noon with a new quarterback. Story up top. Penguins: lost 5–3 in Washington Wednesday. Columbus Friday, then Dallas at home Saturday at 7. | | What Changed This Week | 30-yr fixed was 7.58% | 641 Homes sold was 569 | 921 Price cuts was 931 |
Past 7 days, residential. “Was” is last week’s issue. | What we’re seeing More new listings, more sales, more deals. And a pile of listings that ran out the clock. | What it means The market woke up. A lot of sellers gave up. New listings jumped from 676 to 811. Sales went from 569 to 641, and deals in the pipeline rose from 683 to 730. That’s the busiest week we’ve had in a while. Now the other number. 474 listings were pulled or expired, up from 318 last week. Most of those, 318, simply expired. A lot of listing agreements end with the month, and Sept. 30 fell inside this window. Meanwhile the 30-year sits at 7.59%, about where it was last week and a hair under its high for the year. |
| Why you’d care | Selling Buyers are still buying at 7.6%. But 921 sellers cut their price this week, and 318 ran out of time. The homes that sold were priced right on day one. |
| Buying On a $300,000 loan, 7.59% is about $2,116 a month in principal and interest, about what it was last week. The rate barely moved. The competition did: 730 homes are under agreement, up from 683. If you like one, don’t sit on it. |

| | Meet the Writer Hi, I’m Tim. |
I grew up in Lower Burrell, and I used to hate the city. Then my wife went to law school here. We moved in and never left. I live in Lawrenceville now, and I’ve come to love just about everything about this place. I write about the food, the people, the places, the events, and the weird stuff that only happens in Pittsburgh. I also happen to sell real estate, so I get to take you behind the scenes of some of the most exquisite homes around here, and soon, around the country. What I post reached about 8.5 million people over the last 90 days. That’s close to 100,000 a day. Right now I’m running a YouTube video a day for 100 days. Come along. Mostly I’m just a dude who loves Pittsburgh and likes telling people about it. And yes, selling homes is my day job. When you or somebody you know is ready to buy or sell around here, I’d love to be the call. |
